Hadron structure at lowQ2

2007

This review deals with the structure of hadrons, strongly interacting many-body systems consisting of quarks and gluons. These systems have a size of about 1 fm, which shows up in scattering experiments at low momentum transfers $Q$ in the GeV region. At this scale the running coupling constant of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the established theory of the strong interactions, becomes divergent. It is therefore highly intriguing to explore this theory in the realm of its strong interaction regime. However, the quarks and gluons can not be resolved at the GeV scale but have to be studied through their manifestations in the bound many-body systems, for instance pions, nucleons and their reson…

Charmonium resonances on the lattice

2018

The nature of resonances and excited states near decay thresholds is encoded in scattering amplitudes, which can be extracted from single-particle and multiparticle correlators in finite volumes. Lattice calculations have only recently reached the precision required for a reliable study of such correlators. The distillation method represents a significant improvement insofar as it simplifies quark contractions and allows one to easily extend the operator basis used to construct interpolators. We present preliminary results on charmonium bound states and resonances on the Nf=2+1 CLS ensembles. The long term goal of our investigation is to understand the properties of the X resonances that do…

Testing the strength of the UA(1) anomaly at the chiral phase transition in two-flavour QCD

2019

We study the thermal transition of QCD with two degenerate light flavours by lattice simulations using $\mathcal{O}(a)$-improved Wilson quarks. Particular emphasis lies on the pattern of chiral symmetry restoration, which we probe via the static screening correlators. On $32^3$ volumes we observe that the screening masses in transverse iso-vector vector and axial-vector channels become degenerate at the transition temperature. The splitting between the screening masses in iso-vector scalar and pseudoscalar channels is strongly reduced compared to the splitting at zero temperature and is actually consistent with zero within uncertainties. In this proceedings article we extend our studies to …

On the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity in hot quenched lattice QCD

2011

Extending our recent work, we report on a calculation of the vector current correlation function for light valence quarks in the deconfined phase of quenched QCD in the temperature range 1.16Tc<T<2.98Tc. After performing a systematic analysis of the in fluence of cut-off effects on light quark meson correlators using clover improved Wilson fermions, we discuss resulting constraints on the electrical conductivity in a quark gluon plasma.

Semileptonic B ->pi decays from an Omnes improved nonrelativistic constituent quark model

2005

The semileptonic $B\to \pi l^+ \nu_l$ decay is studied starting from a simple quark model which includes the influence of the $B^*$ pole. To extend the predictions of a nonrelativistic constituent quark model from its region of applicability near $q^2_{\rm max}=(m_B-m_\pi)^2$ to all $q^2$ values accessible in the physical decay, we use a novel multiply-subtracted Omn\`es dispersion relation, which considerably diminishes the form factor dependence on the elastic $\pi B \to \pi B$ scattering amplitudes at high energies. By comparison to the experimental branching fraction we extract $|V_{ub}| = 0.0034 \pm 0.0003 ({\rm exp}) \pm 0.0007 ({\rm theory})$. To further test our framework, we also s…

Electromagnetic lattice gauge invariance in two-dimensional discrete-time quantum walks

2018

International audience; Gauge invariance is one of the more important concepts in physics. We discuss this concept in connection with the unitary evolution of discrete-time quantum walks in one and two spatial dimensions, when they include the interaction with synthetic, external electromagnetic fields. One introduces this interaction as additional phases that play the role of gauge fields. Here, we present a way to incorporate those phases, which differs from previous works. Our proposal allows the discrete derivatives, that appear under a gauge transformation, to treat time and space on the same footing, in a way which is similar to standard lattice gauge theories. By considering two step…

Light transport in hetero-opal photonic crystals

2005

The effect of photonic bandgap interface upon the light scattering was studied in hetero-opals consisting of two opal thin films with different lattice constant. It is shown that the weak scattering regime is preserved in thin hetero-opal films. By comparing scattering spectra of single and hetero-opal films recorded under reversing angles of light incidence and detection it was demonstrated that the interface scatters stronger the light at oblique incident angles. Squeezing of the scattering diagram of hetero-opals compared to single opal films is also assigned to the interface scattering.

Experimental demonstration of single-site addressability in a two-dimensional optical lattice

2009

We demonstrate single site addressability in a two-dimensional optical lattice with 600 nm lattice spacing. After loading a Bose-Einstein condensate in the lattice potential we use a focused electron beam to remove atoms from selected sites. The patterned structure is subsequently imaged by means of scanning electron microscopy. This technique allows us to create arbitrary patterns of mesoscopic atomic ensembles. We find that the patterns are remarkably stable against tunneling diffusion. Such micro-engineered quantum gases are a versatile resource for applications in quantum simulation, quantum optics and quantum information processing with neutral atoms.

Magnetic-field-induced reentrance of Fermi-liquid behavior and spin-lattice relaxation rates in

2009

Abstract A strong departure from Landau–Fermi liquid (LFL) behavior have been recently revealed in observed anomalies in both the magnetic susceptibility χ and the muon and 63Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates 1 / T 1 of YbCu 5 − x Au x ( x = 0.6 ). We show that the above anomalies along with magnetic-field-induced reentrance of LFL properties are indeed determined by the dependence of the quasiparticle effective mass M ∗ on magnetic field B and temperature T and demonstrate that violations of the Korringa law also come from M ∗ ( B , T ) dependence. We obtain this dependence theoretically utilizing our approach based on fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT) notion. Ou…

Spectrum of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with two adjoint Dirac flavours

2008

An SU(2) gauge theory with two fermions transforming under the adjoint representation of the gauge group may appear conformal or almost conformal in the infrared. We use lattice simulations to study the spectrum of this theory and present results on the masses of several gauge singlet states as a function of the physical quark mass determined through the axial Ward identity and find indications of a change from chiral symmetry breaking to a phase consistent with conformal behaviour at beta_L ~ 2. However, the measurement of the spectrum is not alone sufficient to decisively confirm the existence of conformal fixed point in this theory as we show by comparing to similar measurements with fun…
